This February, we’re inviting you to join a challenge that’s about more than just walking – it’s about coming together to make a real difference for over 11,000 families of neurodivergent children and young people across Hertfordshire.

Our ‘One Million Steps for Eleven Thousand Families’ challenge is simple, meaningful, and open to everyone – from toddlers to teens, parents to grandparents, and even your furry friends!

Here’s how it works:

  • Walk 12 miles (equivalent to 25,000 steps) throughout February – break it into daily strolls, weekend adventures, or however suits your schedule.
  • There is no minimum fundraising target although we would love it if you could aim to raise £50 to support SPACE’s vital work empowering and supporting families raising neurodivergent children and young people.
  • Know that every step you take contributes to a combined total of one million steps – a community-wide effort to support local families who need us.

And if walking isn’t for you, you can still get involved. As part of Helping Herts’ New Year – New Challenge initiative, you can put your own spin on the challenge by choosing a “12” that fits your life. That might be 12,000 steps a day, or 12 runs, swims or gym sessions across the month.

Or you could take a more wellbeing- or connection-focused approach, such as 12 mindful moments, 12 meaningful conversations, or bringing 12 friends together for a shared activity or event. You could even turn it into a social fundraiser, like a whisky tasting evening or get-together, and still be part of the wider challenge. However you choose to take part, your personal goal can create powerful local impact for families across Hertfordshire.

What’s even better? Every pound you raise will be doubled by our incredible charity partner, Helping Herts – doubling your impact and allowing us to do even more for local families. Email fundraising@spaceherts.org.uk for more information today.

Why Walk?

Walking isn’t just good for your body – it’s good for the soul. Whether you walk solo to recharge or take your family and dog along for some fun and connection, every step helps us support families who are navigating life with neurodiversity.

Want to get your family involved but not sure your little ones will manage 12 miles? Don’t worry – it’s all about enjoyment. Push the buggy, skip to the shops, or break it down into bite-sized steps. Every little bit counts.

Here are some ideas to help you hit your step goals:

  • Family Strolls: Spend quality time together and chat about your day.
  • Nature Adventures: Explore local trails, parks, or forests and turn it into an exciting treasure hunt for the kids.
  • Dog Walks: Let your furry friend be your walking buddy – they’ll love the extra outings!
  • You time: Put on your favourite playlist or podcast and enjoy some quiet time while you walk.
  • School Run Steps: If possible, walk to school and back – every step adds up!
  • Weekend Challenges: Plan a longer walk as a family and celebrate completing it with a special treat.

Every Step Counts

With your help, we can reach one million steps and ensure that over 11,000 families across Hertfordshire continue to have access to the resources, understanding, and empowerment they need to thrive.

The best part?

Every penny you raise will be doubled through our match-funding partnership with Helping Herts! Remember, whilst we would love it if you can raise £50 there is no minimum fundraising target – we would just love as many people as possible to get involved.
