Boo! We have had an absolutely fang-tastic October at SPACE. It’s been ghoulishly good fun with Halloween parties, quizzes and crafts; half term Doughnutting fun on the slopes; celebrating Dyslexia Awareness Week – including the launch of our new dyslexia assessments – and ADHD Awareness Month; the launch of new on-demand webinars and more fundraising superstars taking on challenges for SPACE. Read on to find out more about what we got up to in October.

Phantom Fun for Halloween

Our children and young people, and their families had a spook-tacular time at the SPACE Halloween party. Everyone got the memo and arrived in spooky costumes that could even scare a ghost! 👻🎃

From ghoulish biscuit decorating to eerie crafts, slime making and spooktacular surprises – it was an afternoon of frightfully freaky fun that had everyone screaming for more!

“Thank you so much for a lovely party. My son doesn’t get many party invites anymore which is very sad so the opportunity to be invited to attend a lovely inclusive party was amazing and he loved it. Thank you so much.”

Dyslexia Awareness Week

Throughout dyslexia awareness week we shared stories from our community including the uplifting story of 18-year-old student Bronte and Amanda, a qualified social worker, who shares how she found ways to adapt to her learning style and the validation that came with her diagnosis

We also launched our hugely popular Dyslexia Assessments which are now available to book alongside our Dyslexia Screenings. Our assessor is a qualified British Dyslexia Association and AMBDA registered assessor and has over 25 years experience of SEN teaching and consultancy. You can find out more about our dyslexia services here.

Runners go the extra mile for SPACE

More fundraising superstars laced up their trainers to raise money for SPACE in October. Stephen and Victoria both took on the challenge of The Royal Park Half whilst sisters Laurel and Layla, along with their friend Alice, took on the Lea Valley Half Marathon. They all successfully completed their 13.1 mile challenges raising an impressive amount for SPACE. 🎉🥇🥳

On deciding to take on her challenge for SPACE, Victoria said “ When my son was first referred to as neurodivergent, we as parents felt lost. It is an area of care that is still hugely under funded and lacking in support and I know many parents fight so hard for their children to receive the correct support.

For us as parents, SPACE have been invaluable in helping us navigate this new chapter and have provided us with support in helping him – providing days out in an environment where the children feel comfortable as well as providing educational courses to help us best understand and allow us to increase our knowledge on how to best assist our son and help him grow.”

New! On-demand webinars

We launched a series of free, on-demand webinars in October. Funded by Herts County Council you can view these webinars when works best for you! Topics include:

Making the most of half term with SPACE

80 children and young people took to the slopes in half term in our popular doughnutting sessions run in partnership with Herts Disability Sports Foundation. But the fun didn’t stop there! Alongside our regular programme of events and activities running throughout the month including driving, roller skating, climbing and more we held a halloween quiz and pottery painting as well as our special halloween party. And we also had our last fishing session of the season, hanging up our rods until the warmer weather comes around again in March. Never fear though – we have all sorts lined up for the winter months including an exciting festive programme.
