Anger can be tough for any parent or carer to navigate, especially with neurodivergent children. SPACE’s Lead Trainer, Chris Russell looks at why anger happens, how it can be a normal (and even healthy!) emotion, and what we can do to help our children manage it.
We explain how anger is often triggered by underlying issues like anxiety, and that emotional regulation is a skill that continues developing into early adulthood. We also explore the differences between controlled and automatic emotional responses, the particular challenges neurodivergent children face with emotional regulation, and why managing anger can be more complex for them.
From learning about the anger cycle and how to break it, to understanding the root causes of angry outbursts, unpicking what your child or young person is trying to communicate, and practical tools like the ABC method (Antecedent, Behaviour, Consequence), this session is packed with insights to help you better support your children and young people in managing their emotions and reducing meltdowns.
This webinar was produced for Hertfordshire County Council as part of the Local Offer. SPACE runs over 40 free online workshops and courses a term for parents and carers of neurodivergent children and young people in Hertfordshire. You can see what we have coming up and book your place here.
