School was out, sunscreen was on standby and SPACE was on hand with a super fun activity schedule. This month we’ll be sharing what we’ve been up to through these (occasionally!) sun-soaked weeks.

So, grab your shades and let’s dive into what’s been going on at SPACE over the summer holidays.

Summer with Family Support

Aside from the buzz of our many events, our Family Support team remained open for families who needed us. Throughout the summer break, a total of 103 families accessed 163 family support appointments including:

  • 66 email appointments
  • 8 home visits
  • 89 telephone appointments
Good News – First Steps: Now CPD Accredited

We are thrilled to announce our First Steps course has just been accredited by the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Accreditation Service! You can find out more and read the full details here.

Pilot: Road Awareness Workshop

Our road awareness workshops for children and young people made a safe arrival at our Lending SPACE! Laura Zitver from RAFT took our children and young people through an interactive and informative Road Awareness Workshop.

During the session, Laura covered:

  • The Green Cross Code
  • Why traffic is dangerous
  • Spotting hazards
  • Safe places to cross

Our youngsters actively participated in the tasks and asked numerous questions to ensure they understood the information well. This was a pilot session for children aged between 6-9 and 10-13 years, and we look forward to running more sessions in the future.

Fundraising Spotlight: Tesco Stronger Starts

Thank you for doing your bit to help support and empower families of neurodiverse children and young people! Over the last few months, shoppers kindly dropped their blue tokens into the SPACE voting box – resulting in a £1,500 donation to SPACE.

Good times at Lending SPACE

Families looking for a cooler and calm spot to unwind and explore found our Lending SPACE the ideal place to be this summer. The shelves are always stocked with new toys, books, and sensory aids for everyone to enjoy.

During the school holidays, Lending SPACE welcomed 378 children and young people along with their parent/carers, totalling 157 families. Our Lending SPACE team enjoyed seeing so many families, both familiar faces and new ones. Parents/carers, sharing similar experiences, found comfort in connecting with each other while their youngsters were able to freely express themselves. Smiles all round!

SPACE kids warm up for a summer of fun

What’s more exciting than causing a splash at Bell Boating and spinning down a steep slope at Doughnutting? Pottery Painting and Therapeutic Farming? Gliding around on roller skates or hanging upside down in hammocks? The answer is simple – doing them with SPACE!

All of our activities are fully exclusive – they provide a safe environment for children and parent/carers alike to enjoy activities on their own terms, relax, be themselves, meet other families and make friends. That’s what sets SPACE apart from anywhere else!

SPACE activities are so varied that there’s something for everyone to enjoy – the summer schedule included fishing, golf, graffiti, stand up paddle boarding, climbing, gymnastics, animal encounters and a wellbeing walk… to name a few. Altogether over the summer, a total of 46 events were hosted with 350 attendees. In addition, 9 1:1 therapeutic sessions were delivered with 19 attendees.

The weather may be starting to get cooler but SPACE won’t be hibernating any time soon – check out our upcoming events – we hope to see you soon!
