April started with the Easter holidays in Hertfordshire and a number of SPACE activities for our families. We held our school holiday Lending SPACE Open Day with families dropping in to take part in craft activities and try out lots of our toys and resources that they were then able to take away and borrow for free. Remember Lending SPACE is open every Monday and Wednesday morning for drop ins.

We had a lovely relaxing session of Pottery painting with lots of children and young people choosing an Easter theme as an outlet for their creativity. And also enjoyed a morning of climbing, balancing, sliding, rolling and exploring at our exclusive softplay session at DJ Jungles!

As the weather warms up it was wonderful to be back at Herts Young Mariners Base and welcome our young SPACErs for a day out on the water.

And creativity was flowing at Girls Group with our April theme of Flower Power! Gorgeous hand painted vases, stunning paper flowers, decorated stones and fantastic tree stump fairy houses. Team SPACE and mums weren’t going to let the girls have all the fun and got stuck in themselves to create some masterpieces alongside!

Our April Check in and Chat was with Polly Kerr from Tees Law who answered lots of quick fire questions about SEND Education Law such as withdrawing children from Year 6 SATS, going to tribunal without legal help, reduced timetables and the legal position on 1:1 specifications in EHCPs. Our May check in and chat is with Steph Curtis talking all things PDA – you can register on Eventbrite.

Croxley Green Group

Offline, our monthly groups in-person groups in Welwyn, Hoddesdon and Croxley Green continue to thrive – everyone is welcome where ever in Herts you live. In Croxley this month we were joined by Speech and Language Therapist Katie Price. There were lots of discussions around speaking vs non-speaking, the ability to discuss emotions, the way autistics can present as having no instinct, executive functioning difficulties in ADHD and autism, social communication difficulties and the struggle to display empathy.

We were also thrilled to learn that we have been nominated for the third year running for a National Diversity Award.

A big thank you to everyone who has nominated us so far.

Now we need all your help to make it through to the next stage! We would be hugely grateful if you could vote for us

Our Summer Term programme of workshops and courses started after the Easter break and we have some fabulous new ones coming up in June and July including Supporting Learners with Demand Avoidance, Understanding Specific Maths difficulties, Therapeutic Thinking and Mental Health – keep an eye out on Facebook and Eventbrite as well as our Events page for when these are open for booking.

And don’t miss out on the few remaining tickets for our May Conference where we are hosting Tony Attwood – considered to be one of the world’s foremost experts on Autism.

All of this plus Animal Encounters, The Patch, Pre-School SPACE, Lego Club, Driving, Art, Cooking, Graffitti a wonderful group of parents joining us for Starting SPACE and more… Wow, what a month April was – thank you for sharing it with us! Bring on May!

SPACE activities are always very popular. To receive details of upcoming activities as soon as they are available to book, please join our community on Facebook and follow us on Eventbrite .
