A programme of workshops for children aged 12-17 years who have social communication difficulties.


SPACE, in conjunction with Speech and Language Therapist Samantha Amos, are pleased to be able to run this SPACE to Connect programme for secondary aged children, aged 11+ years, who have social communication difficulties.

The group will consist of 8 children/young people.

Wednesday 27th April – is a preliminary ONLINE information sharing session between Sam Amos and parents/carers ONLY. The session will begin at 6pm and last two hours. It is very important that parents/carers do attend this session. You will be contacted by with details of how to access your first session. *Children do not attend this session*

After the parent/carer session there will be eight in person sessions between the children and Sam Amos, taking place on the following dates:

Wednesday 4th May – ‘Nice To Meet You’ -An introduction to the group and learning about why communication can be helpful, with activities to get to know each other.

Wednesday 11th May – ‘Knowing Me, Knowing You’- Activities at this session will promote self-awareness (including appearance, likes/dislikes, personality traits and emotions) and self esteem.

Wednesday 18th May & Wednesday 25th May – ‘Body Image’ – Activities to increase awareness of how we use our bodies to communicate, such as facial expressions, posture, gesture and proximity.

Wednesday 8th June – Wednesday 15th June – ‘Talk About Talking’ – Activities to develop conversation skills, e.g. starting a conversation, listening, taking turns and ending a conversation.

Wednesday 22nd June – Wednesday 29th June -‘Friends’ – Activities for reflecting on friendship and trust, including what we look for in a friend and how we show friendship.

These eight sessions will be held at the SPACE office, lasting one hour from 6pm-7pm.

Sam Amos (HCPCreg CertMRCSLT MASLTIP) is a speech and language therapist with twenty years post qualification experience, with a clinical specialism in children with neurodevelopmental disabilities. Sam worked for the NHS as a specialist speech and language therapist supporting children, families, and teachers in mainstream education. Sam is now an independent speech and language therapist. She works with young people with a variety of speech, language, and communication needs, including those with diagnoses of autism, global learning difficulties and developmental speech and language disorders.
